When I was a kid, I had a very simple yet unapproachable dream. I wanted to be a sorcerer; a fairy tale’s good wizard. The kind of sorcerer who helps save the day a couple of minutes before the dramatic finale, just a few seconds before the portrayal of the always monotonous finishing line, ‘and they lived happily ever after’. I have to say that in the past few years, I had never thought if that fantastic dream was only a young child’s foolish game, an early sign of my will to understand and help others (just by waving a wand) or a form of escapism. However, my interaction with particular literary texts unveiled to me numerous fictional and paracosmic worlds which made me think of my childhood's first dream again, and realize its significance in my life. And if you are too much of a realist and you cannot see the connection between our world and an imaginary one, let me guide you out of the tunnel and into the light.
Just
to give you a heads up, no matter how irrational the next statement may sound
to you at first, it is sadly true. Monsters are real; they don’t have thick fur,
sharp teeth and they will not wait in the dark while you walk unsuspiciously. They are not hungry for your blood or your flesh and they do not seek to rip
you apart; at least not physically. But what about mentally and psychologically? Isn’t it
monstrous to be socially surrounded by a group of people who starve to see you
failing, suffering and generally being wrecked? Every time I hear someone complaining
about insignificant physical injuries I think about one simple thing; some
wounds cannot be healed; they stay open till the end of your life reminding you
the same painful sceneries over and over again. And no matter how hard you try
to stand on your feet, they keep knocking you down on the ground. Our scratches,
brushes and burns, and generally our physical pains, will heal eventually, but some other traumas resurrect the same
monsters every night in our dreams.
And in case you thought that was all, don'y hurry to reach to that conclusion yet. What about the
evil witch? Only that real-life evil witches are not awfully dysmorphic but, on
the contrary, they are deceitfully beautiful; or I should use the word intoxicating. They are like the modern apple of Eden; they seem angelic and charming on the outside but they are rotten and full of dangers on
the inside. Despite some differences that characterize our individual experiences, these figures stay just for a
little in our lives but their poisonous touch can hurt for quite a while. Just give it a thought; try
to remember all these people you were sure that they were going to stay in your life,
simply because they showed you that they are willing to, but, at the end of the
day, all they did was to drain you off your courage and take advantage of what you had to offer to them while engraving their everlasting mark upon your consciousness. If these acts are not acts of modern day
witchcraft, then I don’t know what is.
Sadly, there is no spell use or sword
fighting in 21st century in order to defend ourselves. Acknowledging that we all live in a world of fantastic creatures and that we constantly attempt to
survive among them could possibly help though. As a young kid, I used to say
that reality is cruel and, even though I couldn’t fully understand the meaning
of this, I tried to find excuses to enter into a different dimension. Now, with
the still short maturity I have obtained, I wish we could all find a paracosmic
environment; somewhere where there’s evil but somehow fails to hurt us. But we won't and
probably never will discover such a utopia. All we can do is at least peacefully coexist next to
each other. Well...I guess that sometimes you have to let life guide you instead of
trying to guide your life. And perhaps that way everything will fit together. Monsters or witches, foes or friends, they are all there to write your story. We all lose pieces of ourselves when we part from
people of our close circle; but what really distinguishes the importance of these
people in our lives is that some of these losses relieve us from our burdens while others rob us
from our greater graces.
But isn't that how you become youself?
